How these numbers are made

  • The numbers come from the daily .com zone file that ICANN makes available to approved users, processed once a day. Each figure says which day it is from.
  • The zone lists names that have nameservers. A name can be registered without them, so the zone is a little smaller than the number of registrations, and the two should not be mixed up.
  • “Left the zone” means a name was in the previous list and is not in this one. The zone cannot tell a deletion from an expiry or a hold, so it does not mean the name is available.
  • These are totals and rankings only. We do not publish the list of names, a sample of it, or a download.
