When a domain expires and drops

Redemption period

The redemption period is a stage of about 30 days after the grace period when a deleted domain can still be restored by its owner, for an extra fee.

What Redemption period means in practice

Also called the redemption grace period (RGP). The name is usually removed from the zone file and stops working, but it is not available to others. The registry status shows redemptionPeriod.

If the owner does not restore it, the name moves to pending delete.

Why it matters

A name in redemption is the earliest sign that a name may become available in about five weeks, so it is the stage watchers and backorder services follow.
